Questions beneath the surface
Why I read across philosophy, consciousness and religious traditions, and the rules I hold myself to when writing about them.
An open question, not a conclusion.
What is real? What is a self? What did the old traditions see that we have stopped looking at, and what did they get wrong?
I read across Islam and Christianity, nondual philosophy, metaphysics and the history of ideas, less to collect answers than to see where very different traditions point at the same thing, and where they genuinely disagree.
When I write about these subjects here, I will try to keep three things separate: what a text actually says, what scholars broadly agree on, and what is my own interpretation. I would rather leave a question open than close it with something that sounds wise and isn’t true.
